Dr. Jennifer Caplan offers lactation consulting services to all Arbor Pediatrics patients! Dr. Caplan has been practicing pediatrics since 2003 and has a special passion for supporting breastfeeding moms and babies, in addition to providing exceptional care from birth through early adulthood. Lactation consults are billed through insurance, and appointments are held exclusively at the Ironwood office.

Dr. Matthew Barcellona was born and raised in Huntington Beach, California. He grew up with a passion for playing baseball. That love continued at Chapman University where he was Captain of the baseball team and an Academic All-American. In addition, Dr. Barcellona has an affinity for photography. He loves the thrill of capturing a beautiful moment of our earth’s unique landscape and the challenge of photographing animals in their natural habitat. In fact, most of photos hanging in our Deer Valley location are Dr. B originals!
Since joining North Scottsdale Pediatrics in 2007, Dr. Barcellona has enthusiastically embraced his role as a community pediatrician and physician leader. In addition to delivering compassionate care to his patients, he served as the president of the Greater Phoenix Pediatric Society and on the Board of Directors for the Arizona Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics. When asked what he loves about pediatrics, “Dr. B” says he most enjoys making a personal connection with each of his patients and their families to make the experience at the doctor’s office as enjoyable as possible.
On his days off, you might stumble upon Dr. B and his wife, Dawn taking their son, Isaac, on an epic adventure.

Dr. Caplan is happily married and has two daughters and a cat. She resides in Scottsdale with her family and enjoys traveling, knitting, birdwatching, and being a foodie (both at home and while traveling.)

Dr. Catharine (Katie) Cesal grew up in Phoenix and has known from a very young age that she enjoys taking care of others. She found a home at North Scottsdale Pediatrics upon finishing residency and has been part of the team since 2000. She mentors young physician residents through Phoenix Children’s Hospital, several of whom have joined the practice.
Dr. Cesal is happily married with two teenage daughters, one in college and one in high school. She enjoys Spicy Asian food, walking her poodle Tofu and the ballet. She is trilingual and enjoys speaking conversational Spanish and Mandarin with patients. She feels privileged to care for patients of all ages from newborns to young adults.

Dr. Tyler Dirvonas grew up in the East Valley in Gilbert. After venturing to Texas then Tennessee for his medical training, he was drawn back to the crisp dry heat of Arizona. When asked about what he loves about pediatrics, Dr. Dirvonas says he enjoys spending the time to get to know patients and families and making sure that parents feel comfortable with all aspects of their child’s health.
Dr. Dirvonas is married to Caitlin, a pharmacist. When he is not spending time with his wife and dogs, he enjoys playing soccer, running, reading and watching his Arizona Wildcats dominate on the basketball court. Bear Down!

Born and raised in Tucson, AZ, Samantha began her nursing career at Phoenix Children’s Hospital in 2012 in pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant. After completing her doctorate degree at Arizona State University in 2015, she moved to Charlotte, NC to work as a nurse practitioner in pediatric oncology and bone marrow transplant. Although she loved the city of Charlotte and especially the great BBQ, she missed the hot, dry summers of AZ and ultimately relocated back to Scottsdale in 2018 with her husband. Since then, she has been working as a nurse practitioner in pediatric primary care. One of her favorite things about working in pediatrics is getting to build relationships with her patients and families over many years.
When she isn’t working, Samantha enjoys spending time with her husband, Sam, daughter, Lily, and dog, Blue. She also enjoys traveling, hiking, and reading in her free time.

Karen is our Pediatric Nurse Practitioner who joins us with over 30 years of pediatric experience. She has a broad range of experience in pediatric primary care, pediatric cardiology, hemophilia and general pediatric development and behavior. She has a special interest in promoting whole and healthy lifestyles in children and their families. Karen has served as the Chairman of the obesity committee for the Arizona Academy of Pediatrics, and has been an Associate Clinical Faculty member at Arizona State University with responsibility for clinical education of nurse practitioner graduate students and undergraduate courses in healthcare ethics.
Karen is married with two grown children and one granddaughter. She enjoys time with family and friends, running and hiking.

Dr. Jennifer Gerlach was born and raised in Hudson, Ohio and grew up quite a competitive tennis player, receiving a college scholarship and was GTE Academic All American, OAC 1st singles and 1st doubles champion, and was ranked #4 in the Midwest. After she moved to Phoenix and joined our practice, her keen clinical skills have surpassed even her tennis skills.
Dr. Gerlach is married to Dr. Jason Sherman, a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician at Southwest Spine and Sports in Scottsdale. She has two children, Jacob and Elliott, and enjoys hiking, playing tennis, and spending time with family.

Dr. Courtney Mattia was born in Chicago and moved to Phoenix when she was a toddler. She completed her undergraduate degree at Loyola University Chicago and medical school at Creighton University. She was excited to move back home to complete her Pediatric residency at Phoenix Children’s Hospital Pediatric Residency Alliance with experiences at both Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Valleywise Health.
Dr. Mattia was drawn to Pediatrics at a young age. Her younger brother has Trisomy 21, and she appreciated the support and guidance her family received from his Pediatrician. Pediatrics is special to her because of the opportunity to help children as they grow and develop. She is grateful for the chance to form close connections with both children and their families to provide them with the care they need.
Dr. Mattia lives with her husband and children. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family outdoors hiking, playing at parks, and taking day trips around Arizona. She also enjoys crafting, cooking, and trying out the local cuisine. She is excited to be working in the community that has given her so many opportunities.

Dr. Colin Petranu grew up in the north suburbs of Chicago but decided he needed warmer weather, so he moved to Phoenix and joined our practice after his residency training at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Dr. Petranu has quickly become a hit with our patients with his caring, cool, friendly demeanor. He enjoys getting to know his patients and their family and building long lasting relationships with them.
Dr. Petranu is married and has three amazing children. He and his wife enjoy hiking, traveling, trying new restaurants and spending time with their two dogs and three cats. He loves being active and is an avid basketball and sand volleyball player. He can often be found going to the gym, spending time with friends, and watching his favorite Chicago sports teams. Dr. Sherry Pottgen is a native of Arizona and has been practicing pediatrics since 2008. She has special interests in the care of the newborn, nutrition/feeding issues, skin care, and allergies. Dr. Rogan has been with North Scottsdale Pediatrics since 2021. Prior to moving to Arizona, she practiced in Minnesota as well as Colorado. Dr. Rogan enjoys all aspects of pediatrics from newborn care to the transition to adulthood. She is married to Dr. Michael Rogan, an interventional radiologist. They have three children, ranging from middle school to college. They enjoy hiking, traveling and spending time back in Minnesota by the lake.
Cecilia Chou

Dr. Chou grew up in sunny Scottsdale, Arizona, where she completed both her undergraduate and master’s degrees at Arizona State University, earning a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, a B.A. in Global Health, and a minor in History (go Sun Devils!). She then continued her medical journey at the University of Arizona College of Medicine (Bear down!) in Phoenix before heading to the St. Louis Children’s Hospital at Washington University for her pediatrics residency. There, she embraced the "mild winters," toasted ravioli, and her first experience of four seasons. Now, she’s thrilled to return to the desert and join North Scottsdale Pediatrics, where she looks forward to building lasting relationships with families and guiding children through their journey to adulthood.
Outside of the office, Dr. Chou enjoys spending quality time with her community and her husband, Josh, who is a pediatric anesthesiologist at Phoenix Children’s Hospital. In her free time, you might find her exploring new restaurants around the valley, hunting for treasures in antique stores, propagating plants, or jamming on the piano.
